Making Michigan an Affordable Choice
Many students and families across the country are concerned about the rising cost of college. Before you make any major decisions about your future, we want to make sure that you know about your many options at the University of Michigan.
The Go Blue Guarantee is our commitment to keeping a world-class education affordable and accessible for all Michigan residents pursuing undergraduate study at Michigan.
U-M is the only public university in Michigan that covers 100% of demonstrated financial need of eligible Michigan residents. Approximately 70% of all in-state U-M undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid.
Below are examples of typical tuition support offered to Michigan families who apply for aid. Individual and family circumstances affect the actual amount of support that a student may receive.
The Go Blue Guarantee covers undergraduate tuition and mandatory university fees. Tuition is the specific charge you are billed for your classes. Additional expenses such as housing and meals, books, supplies, and personal items are not covered by the Go Blue Guarantee, but many students find other sources of aid to pay these costs.
How Does the Go Blue Guarantee Work?
You do not have to apply specifically for the Go Blue Guarantee. It is automatically awarded to qualified Michigan residents who:
- apply to U-M
- get admitted, and
- apply for financial aid by March 31

Our Commitment to Affordability
U-M is committed to keeping a world-class education accessible and affordable for all Michigan families with need. With the generous support of our donors, we’ve been able to increase the undergraduate financial aid budget by an average of 12.0% per year over the last decade, well outpacing the 2.9%-per-year average increase for in-state undergraduate tuition.
That means it actually costs less today to attend U-M than it did 10 years ago for many in-state undergraduate students who receive need-based financial aid.
Combine that reliable level of financial support with the amazing resources and opportunities of a top public research university, our high graduation rate, a strong lifetime earning potential for graduates, and a global network of proud alumni and you'll see that Michigan is an exceptional value.
We encourage you to apply for financial aid to find out what you are eligible to receive. View our family profiles to see how other Michigan families are funding college educations.
The Go Blue Guarantee and our efforts to keep U-M affordable for all Michigan residents are made possible in part by the generous support of our donors. To learn about eligibility, visit our Go Blue Guarantee eligibility webpage.
